Resourcefulness is in Fashion

Sunday, April 1st, 2012 | A New Beginning

One of the main themes for my year this year- 2012- is resourcefulness.  My fashion, wardrobe, style are a huge part of this.  What this means to me is looking deep into the closet for things I have not worn in a while and things I have never worn.  (I was shocked to find a few tags still on)  It means to me that instead just giving clothes away or taking them to Second Time Around, I am looking at them with a resourceful eye.

My resourceful eye in my closet leads me to look at each piece and ask: what can I mix this with that I have not done before?  I am happy to report that at the end of the first quarter, I have managed several “new” and cool combinations just from getting a little creative.

I LOVE new things and shopping.  This is a whole new thing for me.  So, if you still need your newness, fashion and shopping fix, think about what pieces you can sprinkle in without spending a bundle in buying completely new outfits.  A great book to consult is The One Humdred by Nina Garcia.  Take a check for accessories and footwear- like the Converse sneakers she says are one of the pieces every stylish woman must own.  Pick one or two items that will make several outfits out of what you already have.

An example for me is the red Bebe sweater that I bought in February to wear to the local Go Red for Women Luncheon.  I did not own a red top- this red sweater has brought together at least five other outfits that were not previously possible- and I love the color!

And think about checking into your local high end resale shop- where I am it is Second Time Around- for a great piece or two.

Resourcefulness is also in fashion for those things that you KNOW you will never wear or fit into again- so find some great causes to donate to, or a thankful mom or sister!  They will appreciate it and you will be able to actually see what is left in your closet!

Have fun!

Thanks for the reminder, Kim! I love to shop but I mostly “look”. I usually remind myself that I have plenty already in my closet! My twice-per-year closet-cleaning leads to many, “Oh, I forgot I had this” moments!! Resourcefulness is always in fashion…

I waver back and forth, for sure! I am just really working on the habit, too, that stuff comes out and only the things that are needed go in. Not just blindly shopping. I go with a list now, it helps me not to buy those things that hang with the tags still on!!! Thanks for the comment, Susan!
